Failing First Grade

Not Emma! I am! A couple weeks ago she came home with an assignment to build a model of her home. The instructions were almost a page long and seemed a bit unclear to me. After reading it several times I came to the conclusion that this homework was something that I do all the time for my students. Of course my students are blind and so their maps are tactile but I feel like I can make a pretty good map just the same. I thought the point of the whole lesson was to develop mapping skills and know where things are in relation to each other. First the directions said don't do the outside of the house and then they said only do the outside of the house so I figured that it meant to lay out the rooms and not the stuff inside such as beds, dressers, couches, etc. So I get out all the materials and while we are working on it Emma gets all mad saying we are not doing it right yet she does not have the words to explain to me the real assignment. Feeling confident I keep teaching her my way. Fast forward to Friday and I am dropping her off at school. There are children coming with brilliant houses all in 3-D! Boy do I feel bad. So I see her teacher and tell her we did not understand the assignment and Emma did not know about 3D so we would like the weekend to fix it. I also believe that the way we did it was much more educational because she really had think about where we should put each room in relation to each other etc. Now the other dilemma is that I think a first grader's work should look like a first grader did it. It was quite obvious that the parents not only helped many of these children but pretty much did their project for them. Very interesting. Anyway we worked hard this weekend and fixed her house and also made her pumpkin for another project. I am hoping that in the future I can actually understand the assignments so I can help her. Maybe you will all have to come tutor me. Phew! Anyway here are some pics that I never posted of her first day in the first grade. So far she seems to really enjoy it and she likes her teacher. Next are pics of these silly projects including her princess pumpkin.

That is hilarious. That seems like too much for a first grader. They expect so much these days. I thought I'd be ok helping the kids with homework until they get past 6th grade math, but now I don't know. I'd have a hard time with this project too.
